Metro Vancouver will be composting kitchen scraps. While the idea is good in principle, it's going to fail because of one basic fact: PEOPLE ARE STUPID. They are going to put stuff in there that shouldn't go in there, and our vermin population is going to skyrocket. Oh, and the city's going to stink, too.
Oh, and Vancouverites are particularly stupid. Take this one woman that I saw cycling on the path between the convention centre and Stanley Park. Please. How many stupid things can one count here?
- She was riding her bike on the pedestrian side of the path, where there are runners and walkers and little kids.
- She wasn't wearing a helmet.
- She was carrying a baby (unhelmeted) in a cloth sling while riding her bike on the wrong side of the path.
D'OH!
We had really craptacular weather today. It has been snowing all day, the type of snow that comes down in wet mushy flakes that stick to your coat/ eyelashes/ hair and then promptly melt. Naturally, the streets are a river of slush.
I picked up my 2009 calendar today (50% off; yeah, I know I should have waited). It's an ELVIS calendar. Every day has a fun Elvisfact. Naturally, I will have to show it to Lord Thingy so that he can enjoy it too!
On this day in 1962, Elvis received a lump sum payment of $259,995 for a new contract that allowed RCA to re-issue previously released material.
Well, Wal-Fart is finally coming to Vancouver. Pardon me if I'm not cheering.
Wal-Mart is a horrible, vile corporation that crushes local economies and underpays its employees. And they sell cheap crap. DO. NOT. WANT.
Why couldn't they have located in West Vancouver, where evil lives?
What do you love about where you live?

The diversity...the cultural experiences...the food...and the opportunity to see this when I go for a walk. (It's actually a replica.) Didn't see any guys singing about spam, though.
This morning, the B.C. Supreme Court was going to decide whether or not Storyeum was going to be given more time to get its financial house in order. It is.
Two years ago, we had a branch event there. We went on the tour- a walk through several theatres, where actors reenact scenes from B.C. history. Having survived two terms of Canadian history (one semester of British Columbian history), I was familiar with most of the material. In fact, while we were waiting in line, I was discussing the significance of the Hudson's Bay Company to a coworker from China and explaining some of the photos in the interest hall. After all, I had to make all those history classes pay off.
Admittedly, I don't like tours (I really don't like people telling me where to go), and I was seriously underwhelmed--the last theatre, which dealt with B.C. industry (hey, why no discussion about how irrigation affected the Okanagan Valley?) had a rather hokey song which made me think of the Duff Hall of Presidents and the Mediocre Presidents song. And, as Selma Bouvier pointed out to Bart and Lisa: "If it's this bad, it has to be educational." I hope that they changed the shows around a bit. (I think they could have done a tie-in with One Book One Vancouver--with Obasan, for example.)
I guess I should be happy because at least it'll be around a bit longer and I can continue to make fun of it.
In general, I have three goals for the weekend:
- Do the laundry
- Do the grocery shopping
- Watch "The Simpsons"
If I can do all three things, I've had a successful weekend. And I don't have to watch "The Simpsons" if the show's a rerun. (Which it was tonight.)
I attended a couple of the Alumni Weekend events at UBC on Saturday. I went to the breakfast and heard the new president speak (I was impressed; he seems very enthusiastic and he's a good speaker), then I went to my French class. After lunch, I went to a talk on Forensic Dentistry, which was incredibly interesting. It covered solving crimes/ missing person cases through bite marks and DNA analysis (from saliva and, in one of the cases covered, pulverized teeth from a skeleton found in North Van). I was a little concerned that the talk might be really gross (given the subject matter), but it wasn't, and I found I could follow it with my little knowledge of biology and genetics.
Today was considerably quieter.
I think I'll go to bed now.
